Chapter Nine
Jae
As soon as the dorm door was shut, I pulled Kai into a hug. It was nice to have him in my arms as he rested his head on my chest. I could only imagine what was going through his head right now. It couldn’t have been easy for him to listen to Li’s story.
After a few minutes, Kai pushed me away, shaking his head. “I don’t think I can do this.”
“Do what? Take care of Li? You’re a great brother, and you’ll make a great surrogate father to him if you have to.” There was no doubt in my mind that Kai would be able to take care of Li. I hoped that Kai’s father would calm down and take the boy back, but I didn’t get my hopes up. The man wasn’t exactly known for changing his mind.
Kai shook his head again. “No, not that. This. Us. Chances are, after tomorrow, I’m going to be responsible for Li. I don’t think I can handle being in a relationship as well as raising a kid and focusing on school.”
My heart wrenched at Kai’s words. He wanted to break up? Things had finally started to go so well between us! It felt as if we’d just begun to really date. “Please, Kai. Don’t. We can get through this together.” I took his hand in mine. “Come on. Let’s get some fresh air and talk about this. Okay?”
“Yeah, okay.” He let me lead him away from the dorm. We headed outside and started walking around campus. I didn’t have any place in mind. I just hoped getting some fresh air would help Kai change his mind.
I looked over at him. “Why do you want to break up?”
“Can’t you see? I can barely handle our relationship as it is. I can’t go out in public with you without being scared to death that someone might see us. I have to use all of my self-control not to just barricade myself in our room and focus on school. And now, I might have to take care of Li, too?” He shook his head, and tears formed at the corners of his eyes. “I just can’t handle it.”
I stopped walking and pulled him into my arms again. He was hesitant at first, but then he laid his head on my chest and put his arms around my waist.
“You’re stronger than that, Kai. I know you are. I’ll help you with Li; you know that. We can do this together.”
He shook his head. “I don’t know, Jae. I just don’t know.” He was quiet for a moment. “How am I supposed to juggle school, work and raising Li while in a relationship?” He let out a sigh and looked up at me with a sad smile. His tears shimmered in the moonlight. “I’m sorry. Maybe once I get everything under control, we can try again, but until then, I just can’t do this.” He kissed me on the cheek before breaking away from me and walking back toward the dorm.
